The mediaeval fortress-town of Krapina was built on a hill at the foot of which modern-day Krapina stands. A two-floor building that was partitioned in the 19th century survives out of what was once the entire fortress complex, and this building now dominates the town. The Krapina fortress was built to serve as the central point for defending the border towards Sutla.
